DIET: WHAT WORKS, AND WHAT DOES NOT WORK, YOU BE THE JUDGE?

This page will follow the progress of a person using different diets. Data will also be shown for periods when the subject is not on any specific diet but is just trying to maintain weight. It is not our purpose to advocate or criticize any diet, we only want to show the value of monitoring consumption and metabolism. Data will be updated frequently. Every week or so a report will be published that shows the cumulative effect of the diet. Note most of this data was collected in the mid 1990s.

During the first period the subject was very active working as a delivery person. During this period weight went form 213# to 190# and the subject burned 16 calories per pound per 24hour period. Blood Pressure went from 190/113 to 155/90. Resting pulse went from about 80 to low 60s.

During the second period the subject was employed in sales and spent most of his time traveling on the road with very little exercise. His weight went from 210# to 208# and the subject burned only 13 calories per pound per 24 hour period. Blood pressure changed very little usually about 175/104. Resting pulse varied form 75 to 70.

What follows will be actual data for each day. We will also publish a cumulative report each week or so. If any health risks develop the experiment will be discontinued. If you do not want to view the data for each day and

    Report August 1,1997 to September 2,1997 High fat low carbohydrate diet.

    1. September 2,1997 BP 182/102
    2. Cholesterol 269 as of 7/30/97
    3. Cholesterol 291 as of 9/3/97
    4. Weight 207#
    5. Resting Pulse 68;
    6. The total calories taken in for the report period 93,650;
    7. The total calories estimated to have been burnt during normal activity 87,147;
    8. The total calories burnt during moderate exercise are 1000;
    9. The total calories burnt during vigorous exercise are 0;
    10. The total calories burnt during the report period 88,147;
    11. The deficit calories are + 5503;
    12. The total calculated weight loss is a gain of 1.57#;
    13. The % of calories from fat are 52.712%;
    14. The % of calories from protein are 20.739%;
    15. The % of calories from carbohydrate are 20.630;

    Note: The weight gain was less than that projected by program; therefore, the body is burning more calories per pound than estimated. We have been using 12 to 13 calories per pound and the subject has lost 1#, but the program projected a gain of 1.57#. This represents an error of 2.57# or, converted to calories, the subject has burned 8995 more calories than anticipated. This appears to mean that he is burning more calories per pound than he was in the previous 6 months. He is now burning about 15.026 calories per pound instead of 13 calories per pound in the previous 6 month period. The subject's activity level has not changed, except for the period from August 17th to August 22, and August 28th to September 1. During this periods the subject was working at the KY State fair thirteen hours per day and at another show 12 hours per day. It looks like the high fat diet may have caused a very slight increase in metabolism.

    NOTE: During the first week of this program the subject noticed a lack of energy and possibly some balance problems. Since that date no adverse symptoms have been observed with the exception of some muscle cramps in the legs. A cholesterol test on September 3,1997 indicated cholesterol at 291.

    At present the subject is only trying to maintain weight without paying much attention to the % of calories in fat, protein, and carbohydrate. The report below will show this data until the subjects decides to try either a low carbohydrate or a low fat diet again:

    Report September 4,1997 to December 31,1997.

    Actual weight September 4,1997 = 208; BP 176/99 Cholesterol 291 Pulse = 82
    Actual weight December 31,1997 = 209; BP 166/102 Cholesterol no reading since September 4 Pulse = 85

    1. Cholesterol 269 as of 7/30/97
    2. Cholesterol 291 as of 9/3/97
    3. Weight 209#
    4. Resting Pulse 85;
    5. The total calories taken in for the report period 331680;
    6. The total calories estimated to have been burnt during normal activity 322487;
    7. The total calories burnt during moderate exercise are 4894;
    8. The total calories burnt during vigorous exercise are 0;
    9. The total calories burnt during the report period 327381;
    10. The deficit calories are + 4299;
    11. The total calculated weight loss is a gain of 1.23#;
    12. The % of calories from fat are 36.766%;
    13. The % of calories from protein are 14.518%;
    14. The % of calories from carbohydrate are 40.366%;
    15. Live a healthy and meaningful life.

      Thanks for taking the time to visit our site.You may be interested in knowing the subject in the preceding experiments was yours truly. In 2005 at 64 I was diagnosed by the VA health system as Having: Congestive Right Heart Failure; Diabetes; High Blood Pressure; Cardiomyopathy; COPD; and, Pulmonary Fibrosis Requiring nasal 02; My weight at this time was about 208#. At that time I decided it may be a good idea to look at my Diet & Exercise and Nutrition Program I created in 1995. I am now 69 years old almost 70 and this morning my weight was 145.75. I went off the O2 ( I was told I would be on this for the rest of my LIFE) about 8 months after starting. Over the next three or so years I went off all prescription medication against most of the DR's recommendations. I an no longer diabetic, last AIC was 5.4 in October 2010. Blood pressure averages about 153/63 with a resting pulse of 52. I am having the time of my life training and riding my two pet horses. Life is Great! The report below will start January 1,1998 and like everybody else in the US our subject will try to increase exercise and reduce caloric intake. Book mark this page and return frequently to see how our subject is doing.

      Report period January 1,1998 to April 6,1998 calorie reduction plan only

      1. Cholesterol 269 as of 7/30/97
      2. Cholesterol 291 as of 9/3/97
      3. Cholesterol 269 as of 4/7/98
      4. Blood Pressure January 1,1998 170/109
      5. Weight January 1,1998 = 211# April 7,1998 = 207#
      6. Resting Pulse January 1,1998 = 85 April 7,1998 = 77;
      7. The total calories taken in for the report period = 266560;
      8. The total calories estimated to have been burnt during normal activity = 263304;
      9. The total calories burnt during moderate exercise are = 7399;
      10. The total calories burnt during vigorous exercise are = 0;
      11. The total calories burnt during the report period = 270703;
      12. The deficit calories are -4143;
      13. The total calculated weight loss is 1.18#;
      14. The % of calories from fat are 40.385%;
      15. The % of calories from protein are 13.678%;
      16. The % of calories from carbohydrate are 35.461%;

      The subject actually lost about 4# and the software calculated he should only have lost 1.18#. This indicates he is burning more calories per pound than originally assumed. The original assumption that he would burn 13 calories per # per 24 hour period. He actually burnt about 280560 calories for the entire period, or 2992.5 calories per 24 hr period, or 13.98 calories per pound per 24 hour period.

      The following report will start April 7,1998 and again the subject will experiment with a low carbohydrate high protein diet.

      April 7,1998 to June 7,1998

      1. Cholesterol 269 as of 7/30/97
      2. Cholesterol 291 as of 9/3/97
      3. Cholesterol 269 as of 4/7/98
      4. Cholesterol 241 as pf 6/8/98
      5. Weight April 7,1998 207#
      6. Weight June 7,1998 204.5#
      7. The total calories taken in for the report period = 164869;
      8. The total calories calculated burnt during normal activity = 177605;
      9. The total calories burnt during moderate exercise are = 4892;
      10. The total calories burnt during vigorous exercise are = 0;
      11. The total calories burnt during the report period = 182398;
      12. The deficit calories are -17529;
      13. The total calculated weight loss is 5.01#;
      14. The % of calories from fat are 45.866%;
      15. The % of calories from protein are 19.726%;
      16. The % of calories from carbohydrate are 24.896%;

      We are using 14 calories per pound per 24 hour period to calculate metabolism. (Note: to our surprise the computer has over calculated the weight loss "calculated 5.01# actual; 2.5#". The 14 calorie per pound was accurate during the previous 3 month period when the subject was not on a lo-carbohydrate diet. It appears that current metabolism excluding exercise program is about 13.22 calories per pound per 24 hour period.

      June 8 to September 30,1998

      1. Cholesterol 269 as of 7/30/97
      2. Cholesterol 291 as of 9/3/97
      3. Cholesterol 269 as of 4/7/98
      4. Cholesterol 241 as pf 6/8/98
      5. Weight April 7,1998 207#
      6. Weight June 7,1998 204.5#
      7. Weight June 30,1998 205#
      8. Weight August 11,1998 205#
      9. Weight September 30,1998 202#
      10. The total calories taken in for the report period = 328378;
      11. The total calories calculated burnt during normal activity = 325220;
      12. The total calories burnt during moderate exercise are = 7434;
      13. The total calories burnt during vigorous exercise are = 0;
      14. The total calories burnt during the report period = 332654;
      15. The deficit calories are -4276;
      16. The total calculated weight loss is 1.22#;
      17. The % of calories from fat are 39.694%;
      18. The % of calories from protein are 16.054%;
      19. The % of calories from carbohydrate are 35.350%;

    Metabolism for this period is 14.441 Calories per pound per 24 hour period. Note: during the above period the subject was not on any diet but is trying to watch calories.
